Taipei City saw this year's highest temperature, 38.6 degrees Celsius (台北市今天創下今年的最高溫[這個句子中的saw不是「看到」,而是「歷經」的意思]), yesterday afternoon, according to the Central Weather Bureau (CWB).

Keelung City in the north and Dawu in Taitung County also experienced a high temperature of 38.1 degrees Celsius yesterday.

Reasons for the scorching (灼熱的[相當精確的形容詞,要學起來喔!]) day included the clear sky caused by the intensified ridge of high pressure in the Pacific and the warm air accompanied by (伴隨著) southwest wind, said the CWB.

Heat was also hard to be cooled in such a basin (盆地) area as Taipei, the CWB added.
Taipei City's highest temperature, 38.8 degrees Celsius, occurred on Aug. 9 in 2003, during which the weather condition was quite similar to that of yesterday.

Taitung County recorded the country's hottest day in history as it saw a temperature of 40.2 degrees Celsius on May 9 in 2004 due to the foehn wind (焚風), a type of dry down-slope wind occurring in the downwind side of a mountain range (這個同位語用於解釋焚風).
