別說whatever

whatever的意思是「無論什麼」，可以當成連接詞使用。單獨用在口語中，意思就是「隨便啦」。
朗文字典的解釋：
used as a reply to say that you do not care what is done or chosen, or that the exact details of something do not matter

這個字最好不要在口語中使用喔。路透社今天有一則生活新聞報導一項調查，提到美國人最討厭聽到whatever這個字。

If you want to be a great conversationalist, whatever you do don't use the word "whatever."
It topped a U.S. survey as the most annoying word.
The Marist telephone poll of 938 adults revealed it was more grating to many people than "anyway" and less tolerable than phrases such as "it is what it is" and "you know."

美國人討厭聽到這個字的原因是：
"It is used so often in terms of casual conversation. Also, when you think of the meaning behind it, it is often a way to dismiss (打發走、不理會) someone. It is irritating (令人惱怒的) in that regard (在那個方面). It is much more off-putting compared to any of the other statement we asked," she added.

在日常的對話中，這個字常常使用。而想到這個字背後的意義，常常是不太想理會別人的一種表達方式。就這個方面而言，有點討人厭。

這大概就是一種不被尊重的感覺吧。其中一個人很認真地討論一件事，另外一個人卻一點都不在乎的樣子，就像朗文字典的定義：say that you do not care。讓人有種熱臉貼熱屁股的感覺，對方當然不高興。

其實，學習英文不只是學習一個字的意思和用法，也要學習這個字背後的文化意義與傳達出的語氣，這樣才能將英文徹底學好。
