Basic English competence test in northern Taiwan is a superior judge of proficiency

Teachers and students shared the view that the questions for the English test offered yesterday by the Joint Basic Competency Test for Junior High Students in Taipei, New Taipei and Keelung cities can better judge the English proficiency of students than the nationwide test of the same kind last year.

幾乎所有人都認為北北基的英語科鑑別度較佳。事實上，我的確也覺得北北基的題目比較難。(全國基測的文法題都是以前考過的題型，考古題有寫有保佑！)
 
我不太喜歡下面幾個題目。 
 
難題一：
8. The boss called from the airport an hour ________, so I guess he will arrive at the office soon.
(A) after (B) ago (C) before (D) later 

其實這題並不難，但是我相信應該還是會有不少人選了before這個答案。
來看一下朗文字典的說明：
Use ago to say how much time has passed from the time something happened to now, the time of speaking
Use before to say how much time passed from the time something happened to a time in the past 

以下兩句有什麼不同之處呢！
We went to the same hotel where we stayed two years ago.
(我們去了兩年前曾住過的旅館。)
We went to the same hotel where we stayed two years before.
(我們去了一間旅館，而在我們去那間旅館的兩年前，我們就住過那裡了。)

回到北北基的題目。這題當然可以考，ago的用法沒有超出範圍，但選項的設計確實有為難國中生的感覺。

難題二：
10. The most convenient way to get around this small town is ________ a bike.
(A) to ride (B) to have ridden (C) rides (D) rode

這題其實也不難，我猜答對率不會太低。重點在於，不定詞當主詞補語的用法並未出現於翰林版(北北基共同推薦的版本)所列的句型中(頂多是課文中有出現過)。選項(B)完成式不定詞也沒有出現在國中課本中，考生必須用「刪去法」答題，這是有瑕疵的設計。

難題三：
15. I think ________ is more fun to go to the movies with my friends than with my family.
(A) that (B) there (C) one (D) it

其實這題只是考虛主詞的句型，但題幹加上「I think」後，一定會有不少人掉入陷阱，選了that這個選項。這種考法算是有鑑別度，但我覺得有點「小鼻子小眼睛」的感覺，會讓學習者認為學英文好像只是在學解題。

我認為真正有鑑別度的題目應該是考一些進階的句型，例如受格關係代名詞、過去完成式、分詞當形容詞等用法。題目的難度應該要來自語言本身的難度，而非來自命題設計上的難度。希望明年的北北基能夠往這個方向發展。
